The Team
The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) has released the revised edition of its publication "A Bunkering Compatibility Assessment Methodology", incorporating the latest industry experience, operational feedback, and technical developments related to LNG bunkering operations.
The updated guidance addresses a number of practical challenges that have emerged as the LNG bunkering industry has matured and expanded globally. The revision provides enhanced clarity on compatibility assessments between LNG bunker vessels, receiving vessels, and terminal infrastructure, supporting safer and more efficient LNG transfer operations throughout the industry.
BowWave Consulting GmbH is proud to have contributed to this important industry initiative. Through its participation in the SGMF Technical Committee, BowWave's Managing Director, Martin Mischke, chaired the working group responsible for the revision of the publication.
BowWave Consulting GmbH was pleased to participate in the 15th International Harbour Masters Congress (IHMA 2026), hosted by the Port of Rotterdam from 9–12 June 2026. The congress brought together harbour masters, port authorities, industry leaders, and maritime experts from around the world under the theme "Connecting Horizons – Building Future Resilient Ports Together."
In cooperation with Viereon, BowWave Consulting conducted a dedicated workshop presenting the results of an Interreg-funded study examining the practical implementation of ammonia and methanol as future marine fuels within port environments. The workshop focused on the opportunities and challenges associated with the energy transition in the maritime sector, including port readiness, safety considerations, infrastructure requirements, operational implications, and stakeholder engagement.
As ports across Europe prepare for increasingly stringent decarbonisation requirements, the adoption of alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol will play a crucial role in achieving long-term climate objectives while maintaining safe and efficient port operations. The workshop provided a platform for discussion among harbour masters, port operators, regulators, and industry representatives on how ports can prepare for this transition.
After several years of development, construction activities, and challenges, the floating LNG terminal in Stade is now scheduled to commence operations in September 2026, according to the latest announcement by Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET).
BowWave Consulting GmbH is thrilled to continue supporting this strategically important project. Since the early stages of the development, BowWave has been involved in various marine, nautical, operational, and safety-related workstreams associated with the terminal and its floating regasification unit.
BowWave Consulting GmbH was honoured to contribute to a key industry workshop held at the World Port Center in Rotterdam, bringing together ports, terminal operators, vessel operators, fuel suppliers, regulators, and technical experts to discuss safety challenges associated with Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) during LNG bunkering. The workshop was convened under the auspices of the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) following a recent dropped-object incident during LNG bunkering operations.
As an active member of the SGMF Technical Committee, BowWave Consulting's Managing Director, Martin Mischke, chaired the focus group and facilitated discussions among the broad range of industry stakeholders represented. The workshop highlighted several recurring themes, including uncertainty regarding responsibility for approving and controlling SIMOPS, inconsistencies in operational restrictions, and the need for greater transparency in incident reporting and experience sharing.
The initiative forms part of a wider SGMF effort to review and update industry guidance on SIMOPS, gather operational experience, develop practical materials, and engage with stakeholders across the maritime value chain. Future work will focus on understanding the basis for operational restrictions and improving industry-wide decision-making processes.
BowWave Consulting GmbH is pleased to announce the signing of a consultancy agreement through Caleo Solutions GmbH in support of the development of the landside LNG terminal of German LNG Terminal GmbH in Brunsbüttel.
The project represents a significant milestone for Germany’s energy infrastructure, with German LNG expected to become the first land-based LNG import terminal in Germany. The terminal will play an important role in strengthening long-term energy security and diversifying gas import capabilities within the country.
BowWave Consulting looks forward to supporting the project with its technical and operational expertise in LNG terminal development and maritime energy infrastructure.
BowWave Consulting GmbH is pleased to announce its participation in the recent Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) Technical Committee meeting in London, hosted by Shell. The meeting brought together industry stakeholders to discuss current developments within the gas and alternative fuels sector, ongoing regulatory initiatives, and operational safety matters.
Key topics included the recent container SIMOPS incident in Rotterdam involving an LNG bunkering vessel, which provided an important basis for industry exchange on simultaneous operations, risk management, and lessons learned for future bunkering activities. Further discussions covered ongoing developments and feedback from current IMO deliberations relevant to the maritime gas fuel sector.
BowWave Consulting participated in the H2DeRIBSP (Hydrogen Derivatives in Baltic Sea Ports) workshop held in Storforsen, contributing to the presentation of key project outcomes and ongoing work within the Baltic Sea Region framework.
The project, led by Gasum as one of the principal partner, brings together industry stakeholders to develop practical pathways for the safe and scalable implementation of ammonia and methanol across port infrastructures. BowWave Consulting and Viereon were engaged as associate partners, contributing technical expertise and operational insight.
During the workshop, BowWave and Viereon presented elements of their dedicated work package, focusing on port readiness, risk-based licensing frameworks, and the integration of alternative fuels into existing maritime and terminal operations. The discussions were supported by the recently published project guidebook, which outlines safety requirements for handling ammonia and methanol in Baltic Sea ports and serves as a practical reference for port authorities, terminal operators, and regulators. This document reflects a collaborative effort across all project partners and represents a key milestone in translating strategic decarbonisation goals into implementable solutions.
